Geelong Council Bin Not Emptied

Man, it's frustrating to see how local governments allocate funding to fix minor inconveniences while ignoring critical issues plaguing their communities. Take the Geelong council, for example. Recently, they brought forward $1 million in works to limit inconvenience and boost their public image. Yeah, that's right, they're more concerned about saving their face than ensuring the safety and well-being of their constituents.

Voting fines

And don't get me started on their voting fines. Over 40,000 residents are now facing penalties for not voting in local elections. As a black person, I know first-hand how voter suppression tactics have been used to silence our voices and dismantle our communities. Yet, the Geelong council has no problem enforcing these unjust fines.

Coronavirus and staff layoffs

Coronavirus

Now, with the ongoing pandemic wreaking havoc on the economy, many local governments have resorted to laying off their employees to save costs. But, the Geelong council CEO has pledged not to stand down their staff amid the crisis. That may sound like a noble gesture, but let's not forget that it's the same council that's handing out voting fines left and right. How can we trust them to have our best interests at heart?

Recycling council

On another note, the Geelong recycling council is urging the Victorian government to launch an investigation into recycling companies that have been dumping materials into landfill sites. It's good to see that at least some officials are taking action towards protecting the environment. However, we can't forget that environmental racism is a significant issue affecting black and minority communities. It's about time that these councils start prioritizing the health and safety of ALL their constituents, not just the privileged ones.

It's time for the Geelong council to step up their game and address the pressing issues affecting their community. It's not enough to throw money at minor problems and hope that it'll make us forget the larger ones. As black people, we've been subjected to systemic racism and institutionalized oppression for centuries. We need leaders that are committed to dismantling these systems and creating a more just and equitable society.

Let's hold the Geelong council accountable and demand that they use their resources to uplift and empower their constituents, rather than exploiting and punishing them.
